Reading

We strongly believe that pupils should feel inspired and excited by books, enjoy reading time and progress well in their reading. We dedicate a strong proportion of time during the school week for pupils to read. During our Ofsted inspection in May 2023 inspectors recognised that we prioritise reading. We partner with Accelerated Reader, a school reading platform, to help us inspire, track and support our pupils with their reading. Please read the presentation document below if you wish to learn more about how we use Accelerated Reader.

During each school term we have a visiting children's author who carries out assemblies to all years and offers an opportunity for pupils to meet and ask them questions. Each department identifies subject reading which will help pupils enable a deeper knowledge and understanding of topics within our Pyrmaid Schools Trust curriculum.

Please see below for our recommended reading checklists for each year group. These lists include a range of engaging and inspiring books to help nurture your child’s love of reading. Many of the books featured are available to borrow from the school library, making it easy for pupils to discover their next great read. We encourage all pupils to explore the lists, try something new and enjoy reading for pleasure!

Using Accelerated Reader At Home!

We know that technology is supporting many areas of our lives. Accelerated Reader supports by offering over 10,000 titles of books in online format which can be enjoyed from your child's account. When pupils complete a book, whether physical or digital, they can complete the test from home. This will help them gain points, display the progress they are making and introduce them to further reading which is at the right level for them.

We ask that parents ensure their child has read the book properly and take the test very soon after completing the book. This will ensure that their child performs well in the test and the child shows the progress they are making in their reading. Reading and testing well opens up a greater range of books matched against their ability. Click on the link below to log in to Accelerated Reader. For support and advice on your child's login please see the attached document below.
